About Boss

Premium Eyewear with Luxury Appeal

When you hear the name Boss, the first thing that comes to mind is perfectly tailored men's suits, then probably fragrances, and the third thing that should definitely come to mind is Boss glasses and sunglasses. The design experts from the Swabian town of Metzingen not only know how to set the sewing needle correctly, Boss eyewear frames also ensure a concise and success-oriented look with their powerful shapes.

The Company History of Hugo Boss

Hugo Ferdinand Boss himself was not success-oriented from the beginning. Hugo was born in 1885, the youngest of five children, and his parents ran a shop for bedding and trousseau supplies in Metzingen. Since only one of his sisters survived infancy, Hugo was destined to be the heir - a secure prospect for the future that led to the young man not developing any increased ambition at first. He dropped out of secondary school, but at least completed an apprenticeship as a merchant and eventually took over his parents' business as planned. After the horrors of the First World War came the turning point. Possibly Hugo Boss had also finally found the right goal for his life at the age of almost 40: in 1924, together with two partners, he founded his own clothing factory where shirts, jackets and underwear were produced.

War and Reorientation

During the Nazi era, Hugo Ferdinand Boss kept his head above water in a very pragmatic and goal-oriented manner: his clothing factory now produced uniforms - for railway and postal workers, but also for the SA, SS, HJ and the Wehrmacht. The livelihood was assured, but the forced laborers employed in the factory were not compensated for their precarious working conditions until the year 2000. Boss died in 1948 and his son-in-law Eugen Holy took over the management of the company. Now the focus turned to suits and coats for men for the first time. In 1970, the Boss brand was finally introduced - the rise to a globally oriented fashion group began. Under the Boss grandsons Uwe and Jochen Holy, the development continued rapidly from 1976 onwards. In the 1980s, they added cosmetics and a collection of glasses and sunglasses to the fashion portfolio.

The Hype Begins

The jacket and suit hype of the eighties led to dizzying sales at Boss. Men loved the Swabian accuracy of the tailoring, which gave every outfit a timeless elegance. The step towards the luxury segment was only a matter of time. This came in the nineties, with the sale to the Italian textile manufacturer Marzotto and the new head designer Werner Baldessarini. The new Hugo Boss line was aimed at a younger, modern target group, and was joined by a golf line, a leisure line (Boss Orange) and, in 1998, a collection for women. Jewelry, accessories, children's fashion and interior products followed. However, the attempt to establish Boss as a luxury brand and to be mentioned in the same breath as high-end labels such as Georgio Armani or Tom Ford failed. In 2017, numerous sub-brands were dissolved, leaving only the two core brands Boss (high-end and classically oriented) and Hugo Boss (with a younger design), each for men, women and children.

Passion for Sport and Culture

For many years, supporting charitable, artistic and sporting projects has also been part of the good corporate tone at Hugo Boss AG. The Hugo Boss Prize, awarded together with the Solomon R. Guggenheim Foundation since 1996, is one of the most important prizes for contemporary art. There are also long-standing cooperations with the Salzburg Festival and the State Fashion School in Stuttgart, as well as with Unicef or the children's aid organization "Save the Children". At the latest since the introduction of the golf line with the then testimonial Bernhard Langer, sport has also become the focus of the brand. Today, however, it is less about style on the course and more about the right look for before or after the game. The company sponsors events and teams from the fields of motor sports, golf, sailing and football. Football stars Mario Gómez, Mats Hummels and Toni Kroos are prominent boss faces, as is former Formula 1 driver Nico Rosberg.

Hugo Boss Glasses Style

Hugo Boss glasses are characterized by timeless, elegant shapes. The Boss collection includes many materials and styles: light frames made of metal as well as more striking frames made of plastic, for men, women and of course unisex. So you can quickly find the perfect glasses to match your personal style. The most popular BOSS frames for men are angular models in colors such as black, havana or grey, which can be combined with both business outfits and leisure looks after work - as well as angular sunglasses for the lunch break in the street café. There is also a large selection of Hugo Boss glasses for women, here the top spots are dominated by rather round frames with flattering brown and nude tones.
