Find Your Own Style: 8 Top Tips

    By Ellen | b | Comments are Closed | 31 December, 2021 | 0

Love how celebs like Ryan Gosling, Gigi Hadid or Kate Middleton dress? But still want to find your own unique style? With our top tips you can find out what really suits you and how you can easily find your own style. Because really, who wants to walk around as a copy cat?

Finding Your Own Style: Who Do I Want to Be?

First of all, you might be wondering what having “your own style” actually means. Well, to explain it one way: it’s definitely not buying exactly what shop-window mannequins or catwalk models wear. To find your own style, you first have to be clear about who you actually are and what you want to express with your clothes. Do I want to give off the impression that I always know the latest trends and memorise Vogue every month? Or that I don’t care about clothes at all and only inner values count for me? After all, clothes are one of the first things people notice about us and are therefore a very important factor in the process of getting to know someone. The facets of your personality that you want to show to the outside world are completely up to you. Sounds tiring? Maybe a little. But you will later thank yourself when you feel much more comfortable in your own skin. So why not give it a try? Our 8 tips will make it easy for you.

    1. Get Inspired

First step on the way to your own style: keep your eyes open. Don’t just look at fashion magazines, but also films, plays, photographs or musicians and find out which clothes you particularly like. And if it should be fashion magazines, why not look at older issues from the 60s or 80s, depending on your preference? Social media is of course also an endless source of inspiration, just scroll through Instagram, Pinterest or blogs and note which aesthetics put you in a good mood.

Then it’s time to collect. You can either stick photos and newspaper clippings on a mood board. Or you can create a digital mood board on Pinterest, bookmark things on Instagram or sort your favourite outfits using apps like Canva or Adobe XD. In this way, you gradually develop a kind of guide to your own style.

    2. Think About How You Want Your Style to Fit Into Your Life

The most creative style is useless if it doesn’t fit your life. A gala outfit on the playground looks just as out of place as slippers for a business meeting. Your surroundings also influence your choice of clothes: do you live in a hip city or in a more conservative area? Think about the situations you experience in your everyday life and how you would like to appear there. Then look for clothes that fit several (or all) situations. This way you can shop consciously and cleverly.

    3 Find Your Favourite Styles

If your wish list is long enough, take a close look at it: What exactly do you like about the items on it? Are they all hippie styles? Or avant-garde looks with innovative cuts? Do you mainly collect dresses? Or trouser suits? Or thick knitted jumpers? If you know which elements make a style a highlight for you, you can look out for them when shopping.

4 Make the Most of Your Body Shape

Before you start shopping, you can take a quick look in the mirror. Because whether you’re a man, a woman or a teenager, everyone has a unique body shape that they can really make the most of. Do you have wide hips and narrow shoulders? Or are you broad-shouldered? The size of your head and the volume of your hair also play an important role in how you look to the outside world. You can look for role models who have a similar silhouette to you and compare which clothes might suit you and which might not.

5 Learn Which Colours Suit You

Next, think about which colours you like to wear – and whether they suit you at all. You can find an overview in our blog post on “Which glasses suit me?” Once you have found out your colour type, the internet offers you an inexhaustible source for discovering matching colour combinations and learning which colours harmonise with each other. Then you just have to check if the colours suit you in reality and adjust your mood board accordingly.

    6  Analyse Your Bad Purchases

You can also learn a lot from the pieces in your wardrobe that have been pushed to the back: your bad buys tell you a lot about yourself. Were they too tight or too big? Was the colour not right? Did you have no reason to wear them? If you consistently check all the unloved (and also the much-loved) pieces in your wardrobe, you will get a good feeling for your own style and can avoid future bad purchases.

Switch up your style, easily! With the models of our own brand VOOY, the motto is: big style, small price.

7 Find Basics and Signature Pieces

Finding your own style doesn’t mean accumulating masses of clothes. If you ask fashion experts, you need just 35 to 40 items of clothing as a basic wardrobe – the so-called capsule wardrobe. However, this minimal fashion should be chosen in such a way that it can be ideally combined with each other – including shoes and accessories such as glasses or sunglasses. These basics, which can vary according to gender and everyday life, usually include a well-fitting pair of jeans, a pair of fabric trousers, a striped shirt, a neutral knitted jumper, coat, ankle boots, lace-up shoes like trainers and a scarf or shawl. Go through your wardrobe and find out which basics you are still missing.

You can build on the basics with some signature pieces. These eye-catching pieces give your style that certain something and have recognition value. Vogue boss Anna Wintour, for example, is hardly imaginable without her sunglasses, music nerd Pharrell Williams rarely leaves the house without a hat and singer Gwen Stefani always goes for bright red lipstick plus bleach blonde hair. What is your signature style?

8 Find Your Own Style: Keep Your Eyes Open

For reasons of sustainability alone, you should choose clothes that will still be classic favourites in years to come. For this, it’s often worth digging deeper into your pocket. But you don’t want the whole thing to become boring. So don’t stick slavishly to your mood board, but keep your eyes open and add matching trend pieces or accessories to your capsule wardrobe. A pair of trendy sunglasses or extravagant shoes can turn an understated look into a wow effect in no time at all. Fashion is a wonderful playground, and you are the gardener. Edel-Optics wishes you green fingers!
